They Deleted Everything Else
Meat, organs, eggs, fish, dairy, fruit, and honey. Nothing else. Men who eat this way report feeling better than they have in years and most of them are telling the truth. Here is what is really happening and what it might be costing you.

An animal based diet is what it sounds like. Meat, organs, eggs, fish, dairy, fruit, and honey. Everything else comes out. No grains, no legumes, no seed oils, no refined sugar. Vegetables are optional and mostly discouraged. It is not the carnivore diet, which cuts every plant without exception. Animal based keeps fruit and honey in. The reasoning is that a plant gives up its fruit on purpose and defends its leaves and seeds. Fruit shows up carrying fewer of the compounds plants use to protect themselves. The doctor who put the name on it is Paul Saladino and the idea has been moving through podcasts and gym floors for about seven years.

Talk to a man who has been eating this way for six months and you will hear the same list every time. He sleeps better. His joints stopped aching. His stomach settled. He lost weight without counting anything. His energy holds through the afternoon instead of falling off at two o'clock. He is not making that up. Something real is happening to him.

The largest look at it so far came out of Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard in 2021. Researchers surveyed two thousand and twenty-nine people who had been eating this way for at least six months. Ninety-five percent reported better overall health. Participants with diabetes reported losing weight and cutting back on medication. The researchers wrote that they found few adverse effects, which is not what they expected to find.

Now the problem with that study. It is a big one. Those two thousand people were recruited from carnivore diet social media. They volunteered. Everything in the study is self reported and nobody drew blood in a lab. The men who tried this and felt terrible quit and never filled out a survey. That is selection bias. Every man in that survey already believed in the diet before he answered a single question. What you are reading is what believers say about a thing they already believe in. It does not tell you what this diet does to the average man.

One number in it is worth sitting with. Average LDL cholesterol in that group was around a hundred and seventy-two. Doctors want that under a hundred. About one in five participants watched their lipid panel get worse. Defenders will tell you LDL is misunderstood and that the context around it matters. There is a real scientific argument there that is not settled. You should still know that if you do this there is a decent chance your doctor calls you about your bloodwork.

Then there is cancer. The World Health Organization puts processed meat in its top category of human carcinogens and red meat one step below that. It sounds worse than it is. Those categories rank how confident scientists are, not how dangerous the thing is. Processed meat sits in the same group as tobacco because the evidence is strong, not because a hot dog is a cigarette. The actual figure is that fifty grams of processed meat a day raises colorectal cancer risk by about eighteen percent. Lifetime risk of that cancer runs around five percent. Eighteen percent more takes you to roughly six. Real, small, and worth knowing before you eat bacon every morning for ten years. The quality of the meat matters too and that part never makes the headline. Most of this research pools everyone who eats red meat into one column, which puts the man buying grass fed beef next to the man living on gas station sausage. Processed meat is the category with the strongest evidence against it. Serious animal based guys are eating whole cuts, grass fed beef, and organ meat. That is a different food than Spam. It is fair to expect a different result even if nobody has run the study that proves it.

One thing to be straight about though. Bacon counts as processed meat no matter where you buy it. The category is defined by curing and smoking. That puts the slab from your butcher in the same column as the plastic sleeve at the supermarket. Even the packages labeled uncured are cured, just with celery powder standing in for a bottle of sodium nitrite. Your body does not know the difference. Butcher bacon is better food in ways that matter, usually less sugar and no added water or fillers. It is just not a way out of the category.

Two more open questions. The first is fiber. Cut every plant and you are running an experiment on your gut bacteria that nobody has finished studying. Some men say their digestion has never been better. Others spend the first month miserable. The second question is what you stop eating. Fruit and organ meat close more of the gaps than people assume. Folate and vitamin C still get thin fast if you skip both.

Here is what I think is actually going on. Every man who feels incredible on this diet deleted the same things. Seed oils, refined flour, added sugar, alcohol, and anything that comes in a bag with a cartoon on it. He is eating protein at every meal and protein makes you full. He stopped snacking because there is nothing in the house to snack on. He is also paying attention to his food for the first time in years. Any diet that does those five things will make a man feel better. The meat is not the only variable.

That is not an argument against it. If cutting your food down to eight ingredients is what finally gets you to stop eating garbage then that is a win and I am not going to talk you out of it. Just be honest about which part is doing the work. Also, some men should not start this without a doctor in the room. Kidney disease, existing heart disease, familial high cholesterol, or gout all turn this into a medical conversation rather than a podcast one.

The strongest thing about this diet is also its weakness. It works because it is strict. Strict is easy to start and hard to keep. Most men who feel unstoppable at month three are back on pizza by month eighteen. They will tell you they failed. They did not fail. They picked a plan with extremely limited options and nobody runs on that forever. Get bloodwork before you start and get it again at ninety days. Then judge it on what the paper says instead of on how you felt the first week.
