The Border That Opened Overnight
The border fence separating Ceuta from Morocco

Over a few days in late July roughly eighty thousand people crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, a small Spanish city on the North African coast. Most were young men, who were floating around the border fence on inner tubes and swimming the last stretch onto European soil. At least sixty-seven died in the water and the crush. Spain sent in the army and dropped a floating barrier into the sea. Within days most of the crowd had been pushed back into Morocco.

The part worth understanding is how it started. Reporters and analysts, including the New York Times, point to Morocco quietly easing its own side of the border rather than a sudden rush no one saw coming. It came just as Madrid warmed up to Algeria, a country Morocco has a long rivalry with. It also followed a Spanish court ruling that made fast returns harder. Read together, the flood looks less like an accident than a message.

That is the thing to file away. A border is not just a line on a map. It is a lever and the country holding one side can open or close it to make a point. Ceuta is small and far from here, but the tactic is not. When tens of thousands of people can be moved as a bargaining chip, the story stops being only about migration. It is a warning: a crowd that large can be aimed like a weapon and you rarely see it coming.

A line on a map is only as fixed as the country on the other side wants it to be.

Body Brief

A Calorie Is Just the Sum of Its Parts

Most men treat calories like one blurry number on the back of a package, a thing to fear or ignore. No one really talks about how simple it actually is. A calorie is not a mystery. It is just the energy in the three things you actually eat and each one carries a fixed amount. One gram of protein is four calories. One gram of carbohydrate is also four. One gram of fat is nine. That is the whole code. The number on the label is only those three added up.

Once you see that, a lot of confusing food stops being confusing. Fat has more than twice the calories of the other two, gram for gram. This is why a handful of nuts or a drizzle of oil adds up faster than it feels like it should. Protein and carbs weigh the same on paper, but they behave nothing alike inside you. Protein is expensive for your body to process, so you burn a real share of its calories just digesting it. This results in you staying full for hours. Fast carbs do the opposite. They burn off fast and leave you hungry again by the afternoon, reaching for more of the same. There is also a fourth number, one that never makes it onto a plate. Alcohol is seven calories a gram, which is nearly as dense as fat. Your body cannot use any of it, so it burns the alcohol first and stores the rest of what you ate.

None of this asks you to weigh your food or track a single thing. It is just knowing what you are actually eating. A hundred calories of chicken and a hundred calories of soda read the same on a label and are complete opposites in your body. One rebuilds muscle and holds you over. The other spikes your blood sugar, drops it and is gone. Get most of your calories from protein and whole food. Treat fat as the concentrated thing it is. Remember that the drink counts too, even though it never shows up on a nutrition label.

Personal Economics

What a Car Actually Costs

The monthly payment is the number every man looks at and it is the smallest part of the bill. A car does not cost what you finance. It costs what you finance, plus insurance, plus fuel, plus maintenance, plus registration, plus the interest on the loan, plus the one nobody counts, which is the value the car quietly loses while it sits in your driveway. Add those up and the real cost of owning a car is often close to double the payment you agreed to.

Depreciation is the quiet killer. A new car can lose about a fifth of its value in the first year and close to half within five. It is the single most expensive thing about most cars and it is invisible because nobody ever sends you a bill for it. This is why the same car bought two or three years used can cost far less to own than new. It runs no differently. Someone else just ate the steepest part of the drop for you.

None of this means a car is a bad thing to spend on. You need one and a car you can actually count on is worth paying for. The move is to buy it with the whole number in view instead of the monthly one. A car is usually the second biggest purchase in a man's life after a home and it is the one where the most men quietly overspend because the payment feels affordable and the rest of the cost hides. Look at the whole bill before you sign and let the boring, dependable, slightly used option be the one that makes you look rich in ten years instead of this afternoon.

How You Show Up

Hygiene Is the Cheapest Respect There Is

Some men have the right job, the right clothes and the right words. They still leave a room a little worse than they found it, because something about them is not clean. Bad breath. A collar with a smell to it. Nails you notice. It quietly undercuts everything else he did and the worst part is that no one will ever tell him. People do not correct it. They just file you differently in their mind and you never find out why the second meeting did not happen.

Hygiene is not vanity and it is not about being handsome. It is the most basic signal that you take yourself seriously and it is almost free. Clean, groomed, and put-together is a bar any man can clear with ten minutes and a little consistency. Clearing it does more for how people treat you than most of what men spend money on. A real shower, fresh breath, trimmed and tidy, clothes that are clean and fit. It sounds too obvious to say out loud, which is exactly why it gets skipped. Handle the basics without being asked and you never have to wonder whether the thing holding you back was something this simple. It reads as self-respect because that is what it is.

The Long View

He Lost the Ship. He Did Not Lose a Single Man.
The Endurance trapped and crushed in Antarctic ice, 1915

The Endurance, held fast in the Antarctic ice. Frank Hurley, 1915. Public domain.

In 1915, Ernest Shackleton's ship, the Endurance, froze into the Antarctic ice before his expedition ever reached land. For months it sat trapped while the ice slowly crushed it, until it finally splintered and sank. Twenty-eight men were left stranded on the pack ice at the bottom of the world. No ship, no radio, and no one coming to look. The expedition was over before it began.

What Shackleton did next is why we still say his name. He kept the men fed, kept them busy, and kept them from turning on each other through an Antarctic winter. Then he took five of his men eight hundred miles across the worst ocean on earth in a lifeboat, landed on a speck of an island and crossed its uncharted mountains on foot to reach help. Then he went back for the rest. Two years after the ice first took the ship, every one of the twenty-eight came home alive. The plan failed completely. The leadership did not fail at all. That is the part worth keeping. You do not always get to choose whether the ship goes down. You always get to choose what kind of man you are on the ice afterward.

The Cooldown

Watch Django Unchained (2012). Tarantino's blood-soaked revenge Western. Jamie Foxx as a freed slave turned bounty hunter cutting his way across the antebellum South to get his wife back. Stylish, brutal and a long, satisfying sit.
Drink A whiskey, neat. Nothing subtle, to match the film.
Eat A rack of ribs. Big, messy and built for a movie you do not want to pause.

That's Issue No. 6. If someone in your life would find this useful, forward it their way.
